Adaptability
Life will always bring both expected and unexpected challenges and the complexity of the situation influences the time it takes for one to adapt. The response to the unexpected is majorly affected by things such as:
1. How confident we feel at the time the challenge occurs,
2. Demands on our time, energy, and other personal resources at the time the challenge occurs,
3. External factors over which we have no personal control or influence.
In the teamwork in which I have been involved, there is often a request to direct attention to helping the team develop resilience – adaptability to the unexpected.
The Gallup Strengthsfinder® tool indicates that some people are naturally more gifted at adaptability than others. No matter the external influences, these folk are able to pivot and adapt more quickly than the average person and are therefore a great asset to a team where resilience needs to be enhanced or developed.
However, even if this natural gift is not particularly represented in a team, there are other combinations of talents that can, with understanding and focused attention, be developed to increase resilience and adaptation to unexpected challenges.
