You Get To Choose

One of the aspects of adulthood is that one gets to choose!

A major focus of Strengthsfinder® based coaching is on understanding oneself; the way one thinks, feels and behaves as an expression of one’s core being. Thoughts, feelings and behaviours are mutable – they can be altered and adapted, more so when we recognize the basis on which we have chosen to think, feel and behave in the past. For example, we may have developed the habit of feeling resistant to change because father’s job required frequent relocations which triggered fears of loss. This resistance to change is not part of our “natural” way of being but a behavior developed based on experience.

Identifying that one’s natural way of being is e.g. Strategic (amongst other things, gifted with an ability to plan), helps one use this natural gift to map out a plan of action that enables one to change the learnt behavior of resistance to change. The emphasis then is on actively choosing to discard an ineffectual way of being and replacing it with new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that, with practice, replace the old, learnt ways of being. It’s about actively choosing and using your innate gifts to enable and support the change.
