Rainbow Series: BLUE
As with all colours, there is a wide range of symbolism attached to blue. My first association is with the colour of our planet as seen from space, so conjures ideas of home and restfulness. However, we know that the planet is forever on the move so the restfulness is illusory.
Sky and sea are generally depicted as blue, the latter reflecting the colour of the former, depending on the weather – thus blue tends to represent fair to fine weather.
When I was a kid, blue was very definitely for boys – thus associated with the masculine and elements of life such as authority - uniforms of organisations such as the police and air force are often in one or another shade of blue.
Those with “blue blood” are of royal or noble origins thus indicative of social authority and superior status.
Blue also describes a low mood or intense cold - conditions in which there is a loss of vibrancy and aliveness. And here is the connection I make with coaching – when we are not quite on top of our game, when we are lacking in sparkle and energy because life is being experienced sub-optimally – we feel rather blue - so absolutely opposite to how one would choose to feel over the festive season!
