METAPHOR
“A picture is worth a 1,000 words” it is said!
Metaphor is a great way to encourage the understanding of concepts. And whether it comes in the form of a picture or graphic, a story or rhyme, or even a physical object, the major function of a metaphor is to stimulate ways to know/understand concepts beyond their mere intellectual meaning. Being symbolic, metaphors can stimulate an irresistible need to engage with them, not only intellectually but through the imagination in a playful way. Metaphors encourage novel ways to see the world and open one up to nuances of understanding. We attribute meaning in our own individual and unique way – so, no two people will interpret metaphors in exactly the same way.
My personal fascination with metaphor was stimulated when I studied the work of Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist who based much of his understanding of people on their way of interpreting the metaphors of elements such as dreams, mandalas and myths. I frequently use metaphor to guide people to a deeper understanding of themselves so that they show up in the world in a more consciously chosen way.
