MUSIC METAPHORS

As I love the use of metaphor and have completed the diamond series, I’m exploring musical metaphors this month.

An important part of musical composition is the constant movement from dissonance (what is jarring to the ear) to harmony (what is tuneful and pleasant to hear). Too much dissonance overwhelms the senses and one stops listening; too much harmony could be boring.  Dissonance is a challenge to the ear and wakes one up to the idea that change is on the way. This switching is part of what keeps music interesting.

In a sense, an interesting life is made of up of ongoing switches from harmony (being in charge and in control) to dissonance (feeling challenged or out of control). If we can “hang in there” and not focus too much attention on the dissonance, knowing that harmony will follow, it could focus our attention in a different way and free up our creative resources to guide us into harmonic resolution.

Coaching is a way of guiding coachees to gather together and order possibly dissonant experiences and learnings so they may be resolved into an overall “harmonic” life – one worth leading - and “listening” to as one would to a great composition.
