Women as Leaders/Agents for Change
The impact of change is influenced by the agent of change – if by design, the transition from one state to another is generally easier to manage than when change is enforced. This suggests that it is a matter of where the locus of control lies – if inner locus of control (intrinsic), we get to manage the situation; if outer locus of control, we are managed by external forces.
International Women’s Day theme this year is “leadership” - priming the world to prepare for more women to step into leadership positions.
Leaders tend to have the personal attributes that can influence the outcome of change by managing resources – people and/or materials. Certain personal attributes make it easier for some people to develop inner loci of control and therefore a greater sense of agency. This has little or nothing to do with gender, age, heritage, ethnicity, or other physical attributes. It has more to do with an innate way of being that can be nurtured and developed. Great leaders inspire others to emulate their behavior, drawing out potentials we have within. (This does not mean that what is inspired is always acceptable social behaviour!). Women are intrinsically as competent to inspire others as
are men.
